ABOUT ASIRT
What we do
- We provide free, prompt, independent advice on
immigration, nationality and asylum, following this up through casework, support, appeals representation, and home visits
- We provide information about resources through
advice and training sessions, and leaflets and
posters
- We work with other statutory and voluntary agencies to provide services for asylum-seekers and refugees. We also advocate for changes
within these agencies to meet the needs of asylum-seeking and refugee
communities.
- We encourage self-sufficiency amongst asylum-seeking communities, providing access to resources
such as the use of the building, photocopying facilities, internet and
telephone access etc.
- We recruit and train local volunteers for employment and self-sufficiency,
taking short- and long-term student placements.
- We run educational awareness-raising talks for schools, colleges,
workplaces, community groups and trade unions, challenging
media myths around asylum and immigration.
- We work in partnership with other voluntary, community and statutory
agencies, under the umbrella of the Refugee Strategy Network, to assess,
monitor and address the needs of asylum-seeking communities in Birmingham.
