Vulnerable Women’s Travel Assistance Fund
- The Vulnerable Women’s Travel Assistance Fund was established by ASIRT in 2007 in direct response to the difficulties many of our most vulnerable female clients faced in meeting their essential travel requirements.
- We routinely encountered heavily pregnant women who were forced to walk for miles in order to attend antenatal appointments, sometimes also carrying small children or pushing them in pushchairs. Women who had recently given birth, sometimes by caesarean section also told us that they had to walk long distances in order to find supermarkets that would accept their section 4 vouchers. Situations such as these place unbelievable physical and mental strain on such women and in many cases have led to complications during pregnancy and birth, as well as babies being born prematurely.
- The Travel Assistance Fund has been running for more than a year, in this time we have been able to help more than 60 vulnerable women. We at ASIRT believe that neither mother nor child should be made to suffer as a result of injustices in the asylum and support system, we therefore hope to be able to continue the work of the fund over the next year and would welcome any financial donations.
